Steps To Update iPod Touch To 3.1 Firmware For Free

by Abi on September 16, 2009

iTunes 9 & iPhone OS 3.1 are around us now, both of them are free to download if you’re using iPhone, but you need to spend $4.95 if you are an iPod Touch user to upgrade to this latest firmware v 3.1 to enjoy all the available features. The current upgrade software fee is considered cheaper compared with the previous one, yet many iPod users don’t think to pay for it. So, is there a way to update or upgrade iPod Touch 3.1 Firmware For Free? Fortunately there is! Follow the following steps then:

Note: it’s recommended to use Firefox (not Safari or Internet Explorer) to download the above files, then click “Save As Link”, change to .ipsw extension if the saved file default extension is .zip.

  • Connect your iPod Touch
  • Run iTunes 9 and choose iPod Touch on device list
  • For Windows Click Shift+ Restore
  • For Mac Click Option+Restore
  • Locate iPod Touch ipsw files downloaded in step 2
  • Do not disconnect till iTunes has completed updating iPod Touch

Well done now iPod Touch 3.1 Firmware is yours FOR FREE!

iPod Touch 3 0 firmware update

This updates your iPod Touch to the latest 3.0 firmware.
This is the orriginal update from apple, so no jailbraik yet.
How to use:

Check if you have a first generation or second generation iPod
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch for details)

Connect your Ipod, Open iTunes, hold SHIFT and press ‘Check for
Update’ or ‘Restore’ (depends on if you want to update or a
clean install). Select the appropriate firmware file. Update
takes about 15 minutes.

What if I fuck up?

If you manage to brick your iPod, for example by turning of your
machine during the update, you can always do a clean recovery by
folowing these steps:

1.Make sure iPod is completely powered off.
2.Hold the home button while its off.
3.While holding the Home button, connect the cable. The iPod should power on.
4.Keep holding the Home button.
5.The Connect to iTunes image should come up.
6. Congrats, you in recovery mode.

In I-tunes:

1.Click SHIFT+recover
2.Select the appropriate firmware file.

note: On a MAC, use option-click instead of shift-click
