Don't Use Digg Because It's Not Worth It!

[ 32 ] September 26, 2009 | Abi

Why do we (as bloggers) still want to submit our stories to Digg if Digg doesn’t give us what we want? Well, we all know what we want when submitting our stories to social bookmark, we want traffic and back link, and if we don’t get two of them. Why in the world we still use such social bookmark?

And Digg does not give what we want! It puts nofollow to our link by default (unless you have dozens of people digg your story to get dofollow) and it doesn’t give us traffic at all! If you want traffic from Digg your story must be able to be in Top 10 Stories which is extremely hard task to fulfill.

And Digg doesn’t stop there, it even put nofollow attribute to our links inside our profile area, My God we don’t get anything using Digg.com. We don’t get backlink and we don’t get traffic, thus why in the heck we as bloggers use Digg? There’s nothing beneficial using the social bookmark that doesn’t give us what we want.

I prefer to use not popular social bookmarks but they gives what I want

See you in the next post.

    I agree 100%!!

All it takes is a little bit of code or a small plugin to break your sites out of any of those stupid frames they try to put around your pages. Why should we provide them with content so they can put their logo on it while denying search attribution? Forget Digg, Mixx, and all the sites that want to take your headlines and concepts and build their own traffic out of it without returning proper credit to the creators.

  2. SeoNext says:

Digg is basically a link dump site- people post up links to stories that they think are interesting- and other people can ‘digg’ or ‘bury’ stories when they think it is interesting or a waste of time.
It’s like a news site that lets users select what goes to the front page.It is usually best to watch the newest stories, and also the stories in the categories/topics that interest you. If you like the link, add a ‘digg’ which is like a thumbs up.

  3. yes, i am with you, but since Digg is free, so we have nothing to lose.

  4. Ya digg was worthy previously but now it has turned out to be unworthy material.

  5. agree, social bookmarking sites don’t always give us traffics.

    Hi Abi,
Are you serious about this? I never thought about that…I mean, you know, Digg is pretty well known among us bloggers and I never heard about this. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I’ll find more information about it. :)

  7. raphael says:

    Hey
can you post a list with social sites that allow dofollow links? That would be helpful!

  8. Paula says:

For me Facebook and Twitter are the best social media platform for SEO.

For one you get what is essentially a micro site so you can dominate the SERPs and in face book you can even get backlinks as well.

  9. You’re right, now that Digg uses nofollow there is very little value for promoting your sites there. This was probably their objective since they wanted to reduce irrelevant submissions.

  10. Manhattan says:

Digg is only worth it if you have an INTERESTING article. If you’re just posting random entries then of course it won’t help you. It’s not something where you just get lucky. You need to work for it.

  11. I disagree, exposure is what your looking for in marketing, somebody might repost your article and give you some do-follows.

  12. well, you cannot put a hope too high.
I have never used digg anymore since 5 months ago because it is really hard to reap benefit, just like you said.

  13. Tech Buzz says:

yea Digg is not worth giving much time now, i used to prefer using Digg before few months a lot as it used to drive huge traffic to my sites but stopped using it few months back wen i realised the traffic coming was not returning or worth giving much time.

  14. Pancake says:

sometimes I managed to get a big amount of traffic with some articles, so I will continue to use Digg, but I also like Twitter or Facebook

  15. Anthony says:

I agree, in all honesty. I am very new to Digg.. as i can see, it has not value to me. apparently, I have to load a script to use.. Basically, not worth it!

  16. yummy says:

I never use digg to build backlinks, and i have no idea how to get high quality backlinks, anyone could tell me?Thanks!

  17. are you sure?

i guess a lot of bloggers are using Digg to generate more traffic..

  18. Al Williams says:

Completely agree with the DIGG comments, although puzzled as to how Facebook is any good for SEO considering all their external links are no follow….

  19. I totally agree with you!
And digg traffic is so worthless. Users spend only couple of seconds on your page and then goes back. It makes sense only for people who relates to alexa ranking.

  20. abbie says:

    As Raphael’s comment :
can you post a list with social sites that allow dofollow links? That would be helpful!

    No.. no.
I remember somewhere in your blog has got such a list.
    I’ll go a search..

  21. Digg uses nofollow, this means that there is very little value for promoting your sites there. This was probably their objective since they wanted to reduce irrelevant submissions. Gr8!! idea and a great blog.

  22. ixod says:

I think it is worth it to use Digg as it help give trafrfic for a site

  23. Anne Fox says:

I’ve heard about this issue before. It’s so sad that I’ve just wasted my time sending links there! The guy above is right. Digg is just a dump site of links. Not worth it!

  24. I do not use digg because i know about this, so thanks for you told me in this about.

  25. Arthur says:

I had no idea. You saved me tons of time. I wonder if any social boomarking sites are worth the time.

  26. Matt Hayden says:

Interesting that you don’t think Digg is worth it. That’s the conclusion I’ve come to also. But I’ve not looked into is as deeply.

Basically, it just seems like such an awful lot of work submitting your blog posts repeatedly to Digg to try and get onto page one. That kind of work – like directory submissions – is really boring.

Also, from what I’ve read, you might get a deluge of visitors, but they don’t keep coming back. They’re soon off looking at the next website that’s just been “dugg”.

I think that it’s better to put your energy into writing good content and building backlinks through articles. Sure, the search engine traffic builds slowly, but when you reach a good level you tend to stay there for a while. Also, it’s much more targeted.

  27. Zman says:

I disagree with this article. Digg has a huge impact on SEO. Most bloggers don’t really know how to make digg work for them. Let’s just say it’s all about keyword research. When you digg a site, he is right, you really are not going to get traffic from people seeing you on the digg site. But digg, com has an extremely high page rank that will rank your site or blog on the first page of google sometimes. But be careful, don’t about digg because you will be considered spam if you post about the same this too much. (there are ways around that, too)

  28. Well, when you put it like that I can not really argue. I use digg for my main website and for my blogs and have not seen any traffic come from it. Another poster said nothing to lose as it is free however my time is so precious that I want to use it on sites that work. Seriously considering dropping digg now.

  29. The search engines are well aware that marketers are bombarding Digg for SEO purposes ans I believe that Google DOES NOT give much weight to the backlinks from Digg

  30. tgrimsley says:

yep digg is done as far a I’m concerned

  31. Yeahh…
Digg aren’t given any profit on our blog.. Suck..
