Apolo Ohno Disqualified,Apolo Anton Ohno, one of American short-track speed skating favorite, had to face disqualification sanction after he bumped a skater to fight for silver medal in the Olympic 500 meter short track speeding race event
It was Francois-Lous Tremblay from Canada, who was allegedly bumped by Ohno at the final turn. Ohno managed to place himself on the second behind Charles Hamelin from Canada at the finish line.

The incident caused the outcome in doubt but later it’s decided that Ohno is the one whose responsible for the crash and then he was disqualified, albeit people think that it’s a bias judgment by the judge which is coincidentally a Canadian and Ohno did not bump Francois-Lous Tremblay which cause him fall, as Tremblay outside skate slip before the contact and his inside leg buckle, which would denote his fall to be anything but Ohno’s fault.
This is the result of Olympic 500 meter short track speeding race:
1. Charles Hamelin from Canada won gold
2. Sung from Korea got the Silver
3. Tremblay the bronze
That is the whole story about Apolo Ohno Disqualified
Note: This is an update story of my previous and mistake article
Are you kidding me? He didn’t push anyone let alone cause Francois-Lous Tremblay to fall. Francois-Lous Tremblay fell because he knew he was getting passed. Sung Si-Bak fell for who knows what reason but the replay clearly shows no one touched him. This blog isn’t reporting and is clearly biased..really terrible.
Very sad ohno, better luck next time.
Ohno did not push Francois-Lous Tremblay and Tremblay’s fall had nothing to do with Sung Si-Bak fall. This article contains the worst description of the race I’ve seen so far.
It’s sad but i mean ohno deserves the disqualification.
At least he didn’t whine about it and try to blame others…oh wait, he did.
ohno shouldnt have been disqualified..he never bumped anyone he touched them. but thats not what caused them to fall..they shud ask the person “bumped” if they were really pushed or just touched!!!!!!!!!!!
You missed the part where Mr. Ono blamed the Canadian judge and being on Canadian soil for being DQ’d.
NBC has blocked that interview. It’s only available to the US.
The author of this story is full of beans. To begin with I suggest you go back and watch a tape of this race. Ohno touching Tremblay did not cause Sung Si-Bak to fall. Sung and C.Hamelin “bumped” and Sung fell. The touch between Ohno and Tremblay was nothing like the all out push Ohno received from F. Hamelin in the 1000m finals. Ohno proved to be the better skater and managed to stay on his feet. A Canadian judge was involved in both decisions–nuff said? My last suggestion to this writer is to watch short track skating more often once every four years–you may gain some knowledge. That is the whole story of you not knowing what you are talking about.
Didn’t look like much of a push in the replays, but I guess when the referee’s a Canadian it doesn’t have to be much of one. Looked more like Tremblay leaned in and lost his edge. Sucks that they couldn’t find a non-Canadian to referee the final when they are two Canadians in it. It’s a little too much to expect them to be unbiased in this sort of situation.
Ohno did not bump the Canadian, he placed a hand on his hip which is customary and part of the rules to let the skater in front know there is someone behind to avoid accident and injuries. In addition if you look at the replay in slow motion you will see Canada’s Francois-Lous Tremblay outside skate slip before the contact and his inside leg buckle, which would denote his fall to be anything but Ohno’s fault. The blind author of this piece also attributed the Korean skater’s fall to Ohno, which Ohno was not even close to mind you. If anything it is the Korean skater that should be disqualified for grabbing the skate of Charles Hamelin from Canada to make him fall, a move that the Koreans’ have used in the past and I found to be very dirty as a competitor. If you don’t know what I am talking about go to the final event where the 2 Koreans fell and Ohno and another American medaled silver and bronze. Where earlier in the race the Korean grabbed Ohno by the shin and tried to trip him up almost causing him to fall. It’s bad enough that the Figure skating point system is an a atrocity we don’t bad judging on speed skating too.
Ohno did not do anything thing it was only a touch not even a push and he didnt cause the korean to fall also
you need to rewatch that
rereading is making me piss your article is so wrong
Ugghh, Apolo Ohno AND J.R. Celski DQed. Really?! Im pissed….and sad.
I think that was a bad call because if you looked at the video, everyone had a hand on someone esle. That call was a favorable one to Canada, like Apolo said.
fricken Canadian Judge
the canadian who won gold in that same race had his hand on a compeditor, and just like apolo, his compeditor fell. no reverberation however. but when a canadian falls, the canadian ref made a call that looked pretty bias, and disqualified apolo ohno. just saying…
Wow – I’m American and I have to say NONE of you know the rules to short-track.
The move he did was do or die – there was no room for him to pass at the turn (everyone else is turning too), so he made room. He said so himself, but he’s so obnoxious in that interview that it’s friken annoying.
Even if he was just contacting for balance, if the contact gives him an advantage (e.g. CAUSING ANOTHER RACER TO FALL) then he is at fault.
The PASSER must give RIGHT-OF-WAY to whoever they are passing. If they screw up, THEY ARE AT FAULT.
There are 4 JUDGES FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. ONE OF THEM ANNOUNCES – ALL OF THEM AGREE PRIOR TO THIS.
You people disgust me with your bias. You know how many races Ohno won by DQ-ing other people? You thought those DQ’s were fair back then, and when finally he gets DQ’ed you guys cry? Get real.
Most people complaining do not understand the rules of speed skating.
Quote:
1- When overtaking, the responsibility for any obstruction or collision shall be upon the skater overtaking, provided that the skater being overtaken does not act improperly.
2- A skater shall not deliberately impede or push another competitor with any part of his/her body, thereby gaining an advantage.
3- Any competitor who willfully impedes, improperly crosses the course of, in any way interferes with another competitor, or conspires with another to cause a race to result otherwise than on its merit, shall be disqualified.
Ohno violated the second rule by pushing/placing his hand on Tremblay -> gaining an advantage since skater fell and Ohno managed to balance himself.

During the 2002 Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, the American judge DQ’d the Korean skater so Ohno got gold. We weren’t complaining back then, why are we complaining now? If this holds true, then I’m going to say it’s due to our IGNORANCE and BIAS.
Um sorry to break it to ya but ohno should be disqualified in every game because he bumps in every single game… you should go on youtube and watch every race that ohno has played… you will notice he bumps at least one time in every game…. he is a cheater
Btw i’m American and i’m not proud of being one everytime i watch him play… i hope at least one, ohno plays it fair and square
Yes, but you are all missing the point that regardless of the rules he did not impeed, change lanes nor push. The other skater just fell, and if you ask me on purpose.
One of the easiest ways to metal in short track is to fall when in metal position at the right time.
You are an immature HATER! Look at all the energy that is going towards Ohno. Whether it is good or not good energy, you all have given him the spotlight. Go figure! That’s part of his success…your energy! If the Korean’s weren’t so busy concentrating on their hate of him, they would not have “goofed-up” so badly.
He diplomatically said what he thought. Hamlim’s hand on Sung didn’t get called when Sung went down immediately after. It is, what it is and as they say: “Karma Sucks”!
The truth will come full circle, to either bite or reward the intent of each heart involved.
Aside from the sarcasm, he diplomatically said what he thought. It is, what it is… and Ohno has bigger fish to fry. He doesn’t need the Olympic Games to affirm that he is a person who has value, based upon the 100% effort he gives to anything he does. Haters will wait for the next person of interest to knock off their comments about.
What? Is he supposed to play nice with everyone? He wouldn’t be in the games if he were not assertive with his skills. Besides, Korea wants us to submit to them in competition and in the game of world politics. They want to rule! Do you want to live in the fear that those Korean athletes know as a way of life? Keep trying to play nice and be suprised when you wake up in the “New Korea” some day. Man or Woman up!
Apolo Ohno is a cheater and people need to realize that!. Never support a cheater like ohno!
Then, the Winning Canadian who purposely pushed his skate tip, right into and under the hand of the Korean skater, (who’s hand was down to balance himself around the corner), should have been disqualifed even more. Watch the replay.
This was extreme infringement of space by the
Canadian. Much more than Ohno’s slight touch.
Then, who would have won the GOLD?
This is typical Canada. This is why I didn’t even pay much attention to the Olympics. I knew their would be some whiny controversy with Canada. We all remember Jamie Sale (the cross-eyed figure skater) who cried about her silver in pairs to get the gold with the Russians. I really felt badly for the Russian pair. They had to share the podium. Podium sharing is only for timed sports. Other than that, it’s time for whine.
As for bumping people in short-track, Apolo has been bumped before with nobody getting disqualified. It’s like the Winter Olympics has turned into one big figure skating competition riddled with subjective judging or refereeing in this case.
At the beginning of each Olympics every athlete and every judge are sworn in to be honest and to be honorable. Ohno, by questioning the honor of the Canadian Judge, is basically spitting on his honestly and thus his honor. There is nothing diplomatic about that.
He deserved the DQ. Look, this guys has benefited from many falls that happend around this guy, now he causes one, get caught and now whines about it. This guys is arrogant and should ohnogize to Canada for his comments, he is bad for America and sore because he lost!
Assertive! That’s what you call his technique. Hmmmm I call it dirty. Is he good on the blade, yes, but is he clean? No, not always in my opinion. HE screwed up, he should accept it say he’s sorry for his comments and move on.
Have you followed Ohno through the career or are you just talking about those 2 races! Ohno has benefits many times, especially from but not limited to the Oylmpics, from other’s misfortunes and he sucked them up, now he gets caught and he’s crying about it…that’s speed skating.
Whatever!, they’re in the last turn of a 500, you got be kidding me, he leaned on him because he was coming in too tight no space and it was the only way he could get through, push someone else outta the way…that’s just dirty to me., he couldn’t get it done on the outside, so he just shoved his way through. Sorry, but when they’re on the edge like that, all it takes is a slight push, especailly into a turn. If you knew anything about speed skating or even put a few laps in, you would know that.
Holy Crap!!!!!! Thank you! someone who actually knows what they’re talking about.
You really make youself look bad by making those comments. The French judge admitts to making deals….also OH NO, has benefited many times by other “misfourtunes”, and he been around all or most of them when they happened, he has not been called, when he most likely should have been, he got caught in this one plain and simple, suck it up and move on, don’t look like idiot because you screwed up someone elses race and got called on it…makes American’s look really bad in my opinion, and anyone who supports it. Get over yourself….really!!
Yeah, well said….he just ran out of real estate and tried to pave new ground by using the Canadian as a croutch, these people don’t understand physics at all. Maybe if you explain it to them in NASCAR terms they might understand, ‘bump drafting’ is only good on the straight stretches, do it in a turn and you looking to take someone out, plain and simple.
Bump drafting is exactly what the Canadian men used sucessfully in the persuit…..that was just art in motion in my opinion.
Apolo Ohno had a status of a “well respected excellent international Olympic athelete”. When he complained of bias because he lost, his status was down-graded to “American”
You cannot compare what happened to here to Jamie Sale. It was proven that the russian judge was BRIBED therfore the Russian pair was undeserving of gold. Kind of like figure skating’s form of DQ.
Someone should fire that dumb canadian judge
Sweet cheese!! Thats what everyone should get. THE RULES. And someone who knows about the 4 judges. Very helpful info. This guy knows his beans.p
